From Mac to Framework

A happy switch.

pc setup hardware

When I started working professionally I was given a Mac. Mind blowing. And extremely beautiful at the same time. Specially compared to my university big heavy laptops, probably running a partition with Windows and Linux.

I even bought one for myself later. Kept using it and configuring what I could to my will. But that feeling of wanting to come back to Linux on nice hardware was always there. Linux represents how I think about software. Open, transparent, yours to understand.

I just didn’t know of any hardware that could match what Mac offers. Until I found Framework. Probably still doesn’t though.

The thing about Framework is that is yours. Actually yours. I wanted more memory a few months after buying it. Five minutes with a screwdriver. Twice the RAM. No appointment, no genius bar, no $$ flying away.

Around that time DHH was releasing Omarchy and that whole movement. And I found that extremely great to have a good setup working in 5 mins. But honestly I was already there in my head, wanting to go back configuring every single detail myself. And lord there are!!!

That’s both good and bad. I spent quite some time getting things precisely as I wanted. But at the end is all worth. You end up knowing your machine inside out. Nothing is magic, nothing is hidden.

Not saying anything bad about Mac. They’re beautiful machines and they just work. Or selling Framework. This is just my happy story. I’m glad to be back on Linux on an open hardware, doing things the way I used to and the way I like.
